Imagine that you’re having fun at a BBQ with family and friends when suddenly Uncle Joe collapses. Panic begins to set in. What are you going to do? Sure, you can dial 911. But what if, before they arrive, you could help? CPR/First Aid Training is a must. Extra resources!
It is not true that only doctors need to be aware of this. Wrong! It is possible for ordinary people like myself and you to make a difference. You can add it to your collection of tools for life.
Let’s first talk about the basic principles of first aid. Not rocket science but some basic knowledge is needed. Knowing how to stop bleeding by applying pressure or cleaning the wound properly can be life-saving. Remember that time Timmy was on his bike when he fell and scraped up his knee? It would have been easier for everyone if they had a little more knowledge.
CPR, or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), is another animal altogether. But it’s just as important. Imagine someone else’s heart stopping in your face. I know, it’s terrifying. By knowing how to CPR you will be able to keep the oxygen flowing into their brain until they arrive. The difference between life and demise is a matter of literal life or death.
It is empowering to learn these skills in unexpected ways. When was the last time you were on an airplane and someone needed help with medical issues? It’s true that flight attendants receive training, but it wouldn’t be so great if YOU could help? You’d save the day as the hero!
When I was attending a concert, someone fainted due to dehydration. A guy who had attended a first-aid course the previous summer was the only person in that crowd who knew what to next. He was the first to act, lifting her legs up and giving her water as soon as she regained awareness. This dude was a star in many ways!
What is the best way to start? Local community centres often offer affordable or free courses! Training is also provided by many employers, who understand the importance of it.
It’s time to add some humor. After all, learning is supposed to be fun. Imagine doing CPR to those lifeless looking mannequins who stare back at you with their dead eyes. It would be like getting ready for a Zombie Apocalypse. I won’t even mention the funny yet awkward moments where everyone takes turns as “the victim” during practice.
You’ll gain confidence from this training, despite the jokes. You will feel better knowing that you can handle emergencies, which most people are afraid to face unprepared.
This is another great thing: these skills are universally regarded as valuable by a variety of occupations–from office workers to babysitters to teachers. This certification is a great way to show employers that you are responsible and have initiative.
And guess what else? You don’t have to learn first aid only for serious incidents like heart attacks, broken bones or accidents.
This creates an effect of ripples whereby each individual who is trained contributes to the safety of the community.
Why delay any longer? Take advantage of this skill set now. You’ll never know tomorrow who you will end up saving!
